The Primary Teachers Diploma is a three year program to prepare teachers for the primary schools. The programme contains both education courses which are compulsory as stated by the 2013 Ministry of Education Curriculum Framework as well the teaching subjects.

The Zambian Education Curriculum Framework emphasizes vocational subjects as a way of equipping the pupils with survival skills. There is still a dire shortage of teachers at the primary School level at Grades one and seven in Zambia. This cadre of teachers needs to be well skilled versatile to be able to adapt to the ever-changing educational environment.

The programme responds to the academic, professional, industry and societal needs by equipping the graduate with the requisite knowledge, skills and values to:

• Equip trainee teachers with abilities, knowledge, skills, attitudes and values responsive to the needs of society.
• Acquire pedagogical  knowledge, skills, values and positive attitudes required for effective teaching
• Develop trainee teachers’ intellectual and cognitive skills in all the seven study areas
• Develop trainee teachers’ language and communicative skills for effective delivery of knowledge, skills and values to learners
• Develop trainee teachers’ emotional intelligence and self –regulation
• Develop trainee teachers’ expressive arts and creative skills
• Provide early intervention to children with special education needs
• Develop trainee teachers’ mathematical and scientific thinking
• Develop teachers’ knowledge and skills in education research, entrepreneurship and ICT
