The Master of Arts degree in Linguistics is intended to provide students with a solid background and exposure to subfields of linguistic research. Linguistics is the window to the mind and the programme provides an understanding of the human capacity to acquire, perceive, and produce language. Language in Zambia is dynamic that it requires language practitioners to describe the various phases that English and the Zambian languages have undergone.
The programme responds to the academic, industrial, professional and societal needs by providing the students with;
- Well-structured knowledge bias concerning the systematic study of Linguistics which incorporates both synchronic and diachronic perspectives.
- Grounding in depth and breadth in linguistics to be able to engage in language planning
- In-depth knowledge to enable them explain what human languages share, and where they differ.
- Requisite knowledge to describe the local languages in Zambia.
- Appropriate research based skills to enable them conduct independent research projects.
- Opportunities for critical reflection both regarding the knowledge and understanding gained and the student’s own learning and communication skills.
- Apply the linguistic theories learnt to solve language problems in the society.
- Capacity to execute tasks with appropriate time management.
